BC Instructor Candidates
Here is the list of the "Exams" that are to be completed as part of the clinic. With the OSS hosted clinic we try to write and mark most of these exams outside of the two clinic weekends so that during that time it can have more time for the teaching processed rather than the paperwork being done.
1. Achieve a mark of 90% on the Basic Cruising examination; a current edition written within 6-months of the clinic date.
2. Achieve a mark of 70% on the Intermediate Cruising examination; if you have the IC student standard then we do not ask people to re-write this exam, unless there is a newer exam edition then what you would have written to obtain you certification.
3. Achieve a mark of 90% on the Rules of the Road examination based on Rules 1 through 37,
40 and 45 of the Collision Regulations, and the Canadian Buoyage System; this is known as the colregs exam. It is knowing your buoyage system, lights, sounds, right of way.
4. to 11. The knowledge on these points are covered through the completion of the "Working Papers". These open-book exercises are part of the materials that you will receive from Ontario Sailing upon your registration. They are completed to 90%
4. State sources of (general & specific) local knowledge applicable to any region in Canada and:
a) Apply them in a cruising situation;
b) Apply that knowledge to your local area;
5. For a vessel of the appropriate size (Safety Equipment):
a) List the DOT minimum requirements and the CYA Cruising Checklists items for daylight
cruising;
b) State the check you would carry out on this equipment;
c) Comment on the application of this equipment;
6. State the following for inboard and outboard powered vessels:
a) Prestart
checks;
b) Starting Procedures;
c) Safety procedures and precautions;
d) Trouble shooting;
7. State:
a) The sequence of actions required to operate a marine head;
b) Possible problems involved;
c) Common causes of malfunction;
8. For the Reach-Tack-Reach
Triangle Method of COB return and recovery:
a) Draw a diagram of the method to be sailed from the time a crew falls overboard to the
time of recovery;
b) State the communication and sequence of commands during the above procedures;
c) State two procedures for bringing the crew back on board an the possible hazards
involved;
9. Complete the public relations discussion paper; usually done as a discussion during the clinic, you do not have to actually fill this one in.
10. Demonstrate knowledge of CYA policy and procedures;
11. In relation to the definition of student and instructor standards:
a) Define a performance objective (PO);
b) List 5 verbs most suitable for stating a measurable PO;
c) List 5 teaching methods, their advantages and disadvantages;
d) List the steps to develop a lesson plan from a PO.
12. Achieve a mark of 90% on the CYA' edition of a PCOC examination.
Scheduling to Write the exams...
For items, 1, 2, 3, & 12 you can attend any one of the regularly scheduled OSS exam nights. Or sometimes in the past we have also scheudeled special candidate only exam nights.
For items 4 - 11, you will be able to work on these at home as soon as you are registered for the actual Instructor's clinic.

"Registered" - a candidate that is offically registered with a deposit paid to Ontario Sailing to attend the upcoming Ottawa Basic Cruising Instructor Clinic.
