Boat Handling Clinics

BC Instructor Candidates

Here is a sample of the clinic "Schedule" and what you can expect over the two weekends. With the OSS hosted clinics we try to write and mark most of these exams outside of these two clinic weekends so that during this time we have more time for the teaching process rather than the paperwork.

Pre-Clinic Assignments
Approximatley two weeks before the clinic you will be assigned your first weekend teaching topicss. You will have to prepare a 'classroom', 'dockside' and 'afloat' lesson plan and over the course of this first weekend you will present these lessons. There are samples of how to draft a lesson plan in your BCI Workbook and in the resource material. We do not expect perfection, but it gives the IE's (Instrcutor Evaluators) a staring point to evaluate you teaching and presentation skills.
On the Sunday of this first weekend you will then be given a new set of teaching topics to prepare and present in the second weekend.

Sample Clinic Schedule
Here is the actual schedule for our September 2007 Basic clinic.
First weekend is about building your teaching, communication, presentation and lesson planning skills, plus some sailing where you will be doing the teaching but it also lets the IE's measure your sailing skills.
Second Weekend - The group may be joined by the "Cross-Over" candidates (Blue level Dinghy[LTS] Instructor's, who at thier two previous dinghy clinics have already been taught the same topics that were presented to you in the first weeknd). In this weekend you will be taught the procedures for issuing PCOC cards, marking working papers, the single-handed sail, and presenting you three teaching topics. Now the single-handed sail is what tends to stress out the candidated but it is clearly explained in the BCI workbook. Plus any "registered" candidate may use the OSS Sonars (the clinic boats) over the course of the summer to see what extra equipment we have abaord, to practice the single-handed skills and to become familar and comfortable with these very fun teaching boats.

"Registered" - a candidate that is offically registered with a deposit paid to Ontario Sailing to attend the upcoming Ottawa Basic Cruising Instructor Clinic.
