Techno Cruising

Article submitted to Boating News - Spring 1998

The Internet is fast becoming one of the primary sources for finding any information related to boating.

Information on the Internet is found on two systems - USENET and the World Wide Web. USENET can be compared to a global bulletin board where you can post, read, or reply to a message posted on the board. There are numerous newsgroups (e.g. rec.boats, rec.boats.building, rec.boats.cruising, rec.boats.racing, rec.boats.marketplace) that you can participate in depending on your area of interest. Do you have a question about the best anchorages in a particular area like Kingston? Post your question on the appropriate newsgroup and you should have an answer within hours. Check to see if there is a newsgroup in your local area similar to the one in Ottawa called ott.rec.sailing. Regional newsgroups tend to be more focused on the interests of local boaters, providing them with interesting and valuable information. You may even be able to help your fellow boater by posting a reply to their question.

The World Wide Web is a multimedia environment that provides you with text, couloured pictures, sounds and even video. Web browsing software like Netscape or Microsoft Explorer will provide you with access to an endless stream of data on any subject related to boating. For example, within a few minutes you can find pages (websites) of information on sailing in the Caribbean and what charter companies have boats down there. Many boating clubs and organizations now have their own web pages that can give you the information your looking for. One of the more impressive regional websites you will find is located in Ottawa. Next time your surfing the net check out www.magma.ca/~mcsail/ott/ottawa.htm.

Thanks to the Internet, in just a few short years boaters around the globe have been able to come together to share their knowledge and enjoyment for a sport they love.
